Muskoka 2010 G8
June 25-26, 2010

Canada is proud to have assumed the 2010 G8 presidency and to have hosted the G8 Summit on June 25-26 in the Muskoka region of Ontario.

The G8 Summit brings together the world's major advanced economies―Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union is also represented.

This group of countries plays a leading role in international affairs. In partnership with the global community, it has helped establish concrete responses and marshal significant resources to address critical global challenges in such areas as development, and peace and security.

Halifax G8 Development Ministers Meeting
April 26-28, 2010

In preparation for the Muskoka 2010 G8, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, hosted, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a meeting of G8 ministers and senior officials responsible for international development. The purpose of the meeting was to lay foundations for important development proposals that have beeen considered by G8 leaders on June 25-26.

Improving maternal, newborn and child health of children under five in the world's poorest regions was an important discussion point at the meeting, aimed to contribute to the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality (MDG4) and improve maternal health (MDG5) by 2015.

According to the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 500,000 women lose their lives during pregnancy or childbirth, and nine million children die before their fifth birthday. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, noting that these are areas where needs are greatest, has said that Canada will be making this the top G8 priority at the Muskoka Summit.

Development ministers also took stock of progress on the G8 2009 L'Aquila Summit commitment to address food security. As its contribution, Canada had announced that it was increasing its support for food security and agricultural productivity by committing an additional $600 million over three years, bringing the total to $1.18 billion over the three-year period.
