Amy Brathwaite is from Newmarket, Ontario, although she has been fortunate to call a number of places home. While earning her undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary, Amy participated in a university exchange in northeast England. This experience opened her eyes to the world of travelling-one of her most significant interests. Her passion for writing, photography, and reading have both influenced and fuelled her enthusiasm for exploring new destinations.
After successfully completing a master's degree in development and international relations at Aalborg University in Denmark, she was selected to participate in a CIDA-funded youth internship at United Nations Development Programme Bangladesh. She has been lucky enough to live, work, and study in a number of countries, but it was her recent experiences in East Africa and Bangladesh that cemented her commitment to international development-noting that the experiences enhanced her perspective, challenged her personally and professionally, and enabled her to grow enormously from the people and cultures in which she has been immersed.
After spending 10 months in Bangladesh working as an HIV/AIDS consultant, Amy returned to Canada, where she is currently working as a project officer at the United Nations Association in Canada. She enjoys living in Ottawa, although she hopes to some day continue working overseas in development.
The majority of these photos came from my placement at United Nations Development Programme Bangladesh, on a CIDA-funded Youth Internship Program. During the 10 months I spent in Bangladesh, I was able to travel to many parts of the country, including the indigenous region of Bangladesh: the Chittagong Hill Tracts. I travelled on several occasions to West Bengal, the Himalayan region of India, and a number of states in northern India. In 2004, I spent six months in East Africa, as part of my master's program in development and international relations, working with young people to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and community leadership.
